Value Addition

vc

Our value addition activities are carried out at the AfriOils agroprocessing plant located at Njewa in Lilongwe. The facility cleans, sizes and grades raw nuts and utilises grade-outs to produce roasted and blanched nuts, as well as peanut butter and paste, a critical ingredient for ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs). It also has capacity to produce crude peanut oil and cake.

Apart from peanuts, AfriOils also cleans, grades and packs red speckled and white haricot beans for export to regional packing and canning companies.

The plant’s quality control processes are centered on state-of-the-art Buhler equipment, which is world renown for delivering the highest quality standards in agroprocessing.

TEV Africa Foods is currently in design stage with Buhler, to carry out factory improvements at the AfriOils plant to increase processing capacity, which will take 12 – 18 months to complete

Quality Assurance

AfriOils has focused on quality in order to build a solid export base and works hard to meet the QA standards set by the different countries in the region. The company’s lab performs hundreds of aflatoxin test each month and looks at both buying quality, as well as graded stocks and test for export markets. This is an enormous effort and needs constant attention.  Ensuring the right quality of nut is matched with the right customer to ensure the company makes the most of its available stock is what the QA provides the business. The team has been with the company for some years and has good experience on both understanding buying qualities as well as assessing customer needs.

Dry Beans Offering

Peas
In 2022, the company added dry beans to its product range. This was driven by demand from its customers, many of whom run canning as well as peanut butter plants. Customer demand far outstrips our capacity. We have therefore embarked on an ambitious program to expand our capacity. This starts with scaling up the outgrower network to 30,000 smallholder farmers backed by an extensive irrigation program to enable production all-year-round. A state-of-the-art Buhler optical sorter ensures highly consistent quality of the final product, which is important to our customers.
